Despite heavy rain, the Extreme Enduro at Foxborough Quarry in Sible Hedingham took place with very muddy conditions and it was Charlie Frost who made a long trip worthwhile as he took supreme champion honours.

Unfortunately, the field rented for car parking by organisers Sudbury Motor Cycle Club was flooded, however, they obtained a smaller piece of land for cars only, while 4x4 vehicles were sent up a muddy track to the course.

Several cars had to be turned away with regret, though, when their field was full.

Of the entry of 50, 44 riders started at 15-second intervals and the four classes began by running down a hill to their bikes on the starting line.

Riding in the Pro class, Sudbury’s Jamie Roper soon took the lead but was being chased by Frost, who is from Somerset and was riding in the Expert class.

Throughout the two hours, the duo were neck and neck, with the lead changing constantly.

As the conditions worsened, though, it was Frost, who rides in British Championship Extreme Enduros, who took the supreme champion title by competing 12 laps to Roper’s 11.

All riders struggled around the course and the many marshals on hand had to assist in hauling them up the steep muddy climbs, but the competitors still found it tough on the flat ground over the logs, telegraph poles, concrete stairway and long slab climb.

Roper was the winner of the Pro class on his 11 laps, while Ben Wibberley (Sidcup) was second with ten laps.

Sudbury’s Sam Toy was third with nine laps, Chris Hockey (Sudbury) was fourth with eight and Ian Parker took fifth with seven.

Frost dominated the Expert class with his 12 completed laps as the next two riders only completed seven.

Brendon Mayers of Halstead took second place, pushing Jack Berry into third by 13 minutes, while Sudbury duo Alex Rampton and Kelvin Vant completed six laps.

Rampton took fourth place to Vant’s fifth place by 57 seconds. Two more riders tied on five laps, with Ryan McDonnell taking sixth from fellow Sudbury member Phil Roper by nine minutes, while Jez Moss (Sudbury) took eighth with four laps and Paul Belton finished ninth on three laps.

The Clubman class was also closely contested, with Brian Till taking first place on seven laps and Joe Till second on six laps.

Both of the Clubman riders travelled from the North of England.
