The final qualifying leg of Braintree Golf Club’s Winter League was played in miserable conditions at Stisted but despite continual rain, Andy Wiffen and Paul Moreton came out on top in the three clubs and a putter competition.

Playing off five and eight respectively under the three quarter handicap allowance, they amassed 41 points to finish one ahead of Neil Brice (6) and Tony Allars (9), with Gary Neill (7) and Jon Goodwin (11) third on 39.

That meant Trevor White and Rob Jiggins topped the final table with 105 points, three more than James Hedger and Jack Jordan with Wiffen and Moreton climbing to third on 97.

The leading 16 pairs now qualify for the matchplay knock-out stage.

The year-end Texas Scramble was won by Lee Collis, Joe Mason, Andy Fowler and Judy Owens with a nett score of 52, finishing just ahead of Matt Sanders, Dermot Burns, Michael Webster and Philip Musgrove with 52.6.

The ladies’ final nine-hole stableford of 2015 was won by Jennifer Couzens (24) on countback from Valerie Bethall (15) as both players finished with 17 points.

A countback was also needed to decide third place after five players finished with 16 points.

Shirley Jiggins (16) gained the edge over Janet White (18), Shirley Turner (24), Jennifer Day (24) and Toni Brockwell (8).

The seniors’ first 2016 competition saw James Larn win off a handicap of ten with 43 points.

He finished three points clear of Terry Barke (12), with Greg North (13) edging out Roy Barnes (11) for third place on countback after both had 38 points.
