Goals either side of the half-time break saw Heybridge Swifts bow out of the FA Trophy with a 2-0 first qualifying round defeat at Cheshunt.

It was a result that reflected the teams’ respective positions in Ryman League division north, as Jody Brown’s team were unable to make further progress in the competition.

Heybridge travelled with a number of their squad cup-tied after earlier involvements for other clubs in the competition, but they were able to hand starts to young Leyton Orient loanees Sam Ling and Jack Humphrey.

The visitors were sitting 18 places below Cheshunt in the division north table at the start of the day, but there looked to be nothing between them heading into the half-time break.

However, the hosts managed to get their noses in front in the 44th minute when Adam Bolle fired in from the penalty spot.

It gave Cheshunt a lift and their position in the next round was assured five minutes after the restart when Kyle Assante fired in a second.

And despite Bolle being dismissed in the game’s latter stages after a second yellow card, there was no way back for Swifts.

In a limited programme of Ryman League division north action, there was joy at Park Drive for MALDON & TIPTREE as David Wright’s side beat visiting Aveley 2-1.

They had to come from behind to do so, though.

Aveley reached the interval holding a 1-0 lead after Billy Holland had given them a 31st minute advantage, but it all changed after the break.

Within three minutes of the restart Femi Akinwande gave the Jammers a leveller as he slotted the ball home after Darren Mills had won it in an advanced position and Akinwande was on target again in the 63rd minute.

This time it was a winning strike and came from another assist by Mills as Maldon dominated the second period to take the three points.

However, it was frustrating day for WITHAM TOWN as their game against Cray Wanderers was postponed.
