Halstead Cricket Club captain Josh Wells knows his team are good enough to win Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one games, so he wants his batsmen to prove it.

A 50-run defeat by Frinton seconds was another case of Halstead allowing a win to slip away from them as, like they have seen on several other occasions this season, they failed to chase down the Seasiders’ total of 258.

It was a blow as it left them in the bottom three in the table ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Wivenhoe and Wells wants to see their batsmen show the quality that he knows is there.

Wells said: “We didn’t make it easy for ourselves this time.

“We only put down one chance, but it was Frinton’s overseas player (Shayne Moseley) who went on to make 75 so that was a big point in the game, but it was a bit sloppy and that cost us about 30 to 40 runs.

“Chasing 220 instead of 260 gives you a different mindset, but we still got off to a good start with myself and Charlie (Douglas-Hughes).

“However, it was a shame that neither of us was able to go on and finish it off as we struggled again in the middle order.

“It’s been a problem, but it’s been happening ever since I’ve been at the club really.

“We seem to suffer from mini batting collapses when we are chasing and that just kills our chances of winning the game.

“We have a young side, especially in that middle part of the batting order, but we need people to take responsibility in a run chase.

“I don’t think much needs to change, it’s just a case of winning a couple of games and we will go from there."
