Young athletes from local schools excelled on the big stage as they enjoyed gold medal success at the Independent Schools Association National Finals in Birmingham.

Gosfield School’s Leisha Hunt made two visits to the podium after the 12-year-old Braintree and District Athletic Club star won gold in the 75 metre hurdles and backed that up with long jump silver after a leap of 4.14m.

A quartet of pupils from St Margaret’s Prep School in Gosfield were also representing the eastern region at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.

Lucy Sansom-Jamil, who is ten, won gold in the high jump and there were also medals for nine-year-olds Charlie Martin, Charlie Lunn and Huey Hall.

Martin took gold in the long jump as well as going close to another medal with a fourth place in the long jump, while Lunn won a gold in the throwing and Hall claimed 600m silver.
