Great Scott! - Halstead go top
Mark Benterman would have been pleased with a point from their game against Fakenham Town – so to get three was particularly pleasing for the Halstead Town boss.
And the fact that those points took them top of Thurlow Nunn League division one on goal difference made the day an especially memorable one at Rosemary Lane.
With Halstead and Fakenham having hit a combined total of 67 goals in 17 league games prior to this fixture, this clash had a 0-0 stalemate written all over it.
And it looked as if that would be that case with seven minutes to go, but a moment of magic from substitute Scott Kemp gave Halstead a 1-0 victory.
Benterman said: “Someone said before the game that we had both scored 30-odd goals each, so it had 0-0 written all over it.
“First half I thought we shaded it and could have gone one or two ahead, but the second half was 50/50 and anyone could have won it then.
“But we’ve got a little diamond on the bench called Scotty Kemp.
“He can’t play for us too often because he is at the Colne College, but when he can it’s a great plus and he came on and scored a worldy.
“I’m very happy with the three points because I had said before the game that if we could get point it would show how far we’ve come.
“To get three – it doesn’t matter how they come – is fantastic and with other results going our way, we are top of the table.
“Fakenham were up near the top last year, so you’d expect them to be up there again this year as they have two great strikers who are a handful.
“If you can take points off them, you aren’t going to be far short yourself.
“We have five games in this month and that’s three points that we didn’t expect.
“We are three better off from what we thought already.
“If we can keep doing that then hopefully we’ll be up in the mix in December and push on in the second half of the season.”
