SCORING in both medal competitions over the weekend at Braintree Golf Club, which form the qualifying rounds for this week’s Club Championship, was impressive.

With the leading 12 players overall qualifying, the Saturday event saw Charlie Nibbs return a net two under par 65 playing off three to fill top spot finishing a shot ahead of John Bradford (+1) and Malcolm Edney (5), with Sean Kelly (5) in fourth spot with net 68.

Sunday’s play was equally impressive, with Glen Justice a clear winner with a net 66 off 19.

He finished three ahead of four players and, after a countback, Kevin Smith (10) took second spot ahead of Martin Hawes (2), Paul Vale (15) and Chris Voller (16).

Daniel Haylett, playing off nine, won the men’s midweek stableford with 38 points, four better than runner-up David Hammond (20), with Stephen Denton (19) third with 26.

The ladies’ Spring Meeting resulted in victory for Sue Halls (22) with 36 points.

She finished a point ahead of Judith Owens (31) with three players returning 34 points.

After a countback, Valda Curtis (26) finished third ahead of Tricia Stallwood (27) and Rosemary Kerr (20).

Meanwhile, Paul Yeates, playing off 15, was a clear winner of the seniors’ Frank Sellars Plate with 39 points.

Four points behind were Kenneth Rowe (11) and John Snow (16), with Rowe taking second spot on countback.

In fourth place with 34 was Ken Grange (25).

Braintree ladies’ Silver Trophy team secured a 4-1 victory over Orsett, while in the second round of the Munro Foursomes at Crondon Park, Braintree’s Julie Race and Judy Pryke secured an impressive 6&5 win over a Theydon Bois pairing.
