BRAINTREE TOWN climbed into the play-off places after a fantastic 2-1 victory at Truro City.

The Iron moved up to sixth in Vanarama National League South after leapfrogging both St Albans City and their Cornish hosts.

Brad Quinton’s men have just two games left to cement a top-seven spot, with Tuesday’s home match against Oxford City followed by a final-day encounter with Gloucester City, also at the Ironmongery Direct Stadium.

It promises to be a thrilling week and the Iron gave their chances a major boost after winning their fourth straight game on Saturday.

They got off to a dream start with a goal after just eight minutes.

Ben Wyatt chased a ball forward and as it fell in the box, he fired his shot inside the far corner.

Jamie Richards popped up with an equaliser just before the half-hour mark, pouncing at the far post.

But Braintree were not to be denied and Dan Thompson grabbed their winner after 63 minutes.

He capitalised on a defensive lapse and after finding himself one-on-one with the home keeper, coolly slotted home a precious goal.

Braintree have 66 points from their 40 games – two less than fifth-placed Essex neighbours Chelmsford City.

Hampton and Richmond and Hemel Hempstead, in third and fourth, can still be caught while Braintree will obviously also have a keen eye on the final fixtures involving Chelmsford, St Albans and Truro.

Chelmsford lost 2-0 to Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday while St Albans were defeated 3-1 by Hampton.
