Colchester United head coach John McGreal says they will be looking for answers from some of their soon to be out-of-contract players on whether or not they will be staying at the club, next season.

The U's boss has revealed that they have made offers to some of their existing squad members, who are due to see their current deals expire this summer.

But they are still to begin negotiations with other players and boss McGreal says that they have 'irons in the fire' with potential new signings.

McGreal said: “Not everyone is aware (whether or not contracts will be offered).

“One or two are and one or two aren’t so it’s all to play for, in a way.

“There’s a lot of conversations going on and on the outside as well, with people trying to get in touch with us on different things.

“We’ve got a few offers in place for other players as well and it’s coming to the stage where we’re looking for answers from them, if not moving on elsewhere with us having a few irons in the fire elsewhere."

Courtney Senior, who was due to see his contract run out this summer, agreed a new two-year deal with Colchester this week.

But the future of a host of first-team players who see their present deals expire this summer, including the likes of Sam Walker, Brennan Dickenson, Luke Prosser, Tom Lapslie, Drey Wright and Kane Vincent-Young, is still uncertain.

McGreal added: “There’s a few offers but we’re still only in April and these boys are contracted up until four weeks’ notice when their contract is out.

“There’s plenty of football to be played and things can change in a heartbeat."
