ESSEX University Boxing Club's Reese Wade powered his way through to the Eastern Counties Final.

The talented welterweight put in a strong accurate display of boxing to take the verdict against Maldon's very strong Jack Martin in their semi-final, at Billericay.

Wade will now take on Harwich BC's Paul Gordon in the final, on Friday.

Wade has been in top form this year, showing good learning and notching up win after win in some fine displays of boxing and this was another to treasure.

From the opening bell, it was the 19-year-old student's accurate punching that dominated the first minute.

And when Wade land a three-punch combination, it stopped Martin in his tracks.

Martin quickly recovered but this was a very good round for Wade.

The second round saw the Essex University student on his back foot with the jab picking his opponent off and giving him space to land his punches.

Martin pressured all the time but the accuracy came from Wade, as he took the second round.

Martin put the pressure on in the final round but the Essex University boxer was up to the task and took the verdict, in a very good match up.

Essex University's light welterweight youth boxer Louie O'Doherty made a victorious return to action, after a long break.

He took on Fenland Sparta's John Smith, coming away with a convincing points win.

O'Doherty has not boxed for five months so this was a good bout to come back into.

Smith was a much taller opponent so the 17-year-old had some work to do to get within his range.

Showing his athleticism, O'Doherty slipped in and out landing right hand counters with power and accuracy to take the first round.

The Essex University boxer dropped to the body with right hands followed by left hooks, in the second round.

This proved a a more decisive round, with Smith not really having an answer for it.

O'Doherty started to enjoy himself more in the last round but forgot some of his work and became a little careless with his defence.

Nevertheless, he was still able to claim an excellent win.

Aaron Spenner returned to the ring after a four-year absence but found Harwich's Paul Gordon too strong.

Gordon ran out a convincing winner to progress to a meeting with Wade, on Friday.
