Colchester United boss John McGreal is hoping for another slice of perfection at Luton Town tomorrow.

The U’s secured one of their most impressive results of the season at Kenilworth Road on Boxing Day, grabbing a late 1-0 victory thanks to Craig Slater’s goal.

McGreal described it as a “perfect away display” - and hopes lightning strikes twice when his team return to Bedfordshire (kick-off 3pm).

“Luton was probably our perfect away display last season and if we can emulate that, I’ll be delighted,” said the club’s head coach.

“The support we took there really helped and I thought we played particularly well.

“It’s got all the makings of another great game but we know it’s going to be tough.

“Even though they’ve lost one or two, Luton have got a good array of talent and players coming back from injury.

“(Boss) Nathan Jones will have his team up for it, but I’m hoping my boys keep emulating what they’re doing in training and continue with that momentum we had in the last half-hour against Stevenage. It’s up to us to go there and try and get something.”

Colchester notched first point of the season against Stevenage, drawing 1-1 thanks to a leveller from Mikael Mandron.

Luton, meanwhile, thumped Yeovil Town 8-2 on the opening day of the season but were brought back to earth after conceding a late goal and losing 1-0 at Barnet on Saturday.

“Luton are a tough team in this division,” added McGreal.

“They had a great win followed by a last-minute defeat and I think only one team have won both their opening two games.

“That shows it’s highly competitive and a lot of teams beat each other.

“But from our point of view, last week was a great point to build on and I’d say we’re moving forward, looking back on our three games.”

Meanwhile, the U’s boss is hoping the five players offered new contracts put pen to paper. Brennan Dickenson, Kurtis Guthrie, Tom Lapslie, Frankie Kent and Drey Wright have all been given the chance to extend their stays at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

“We’re prioritising who we’d like to stay and then when it comes to number crunching, it’s down to (chairman) Robbie (Cowling) and (director of football) Tony (Humes),” said McGreal.

“Hopefully they can get the deals over the line.”
