PLAYGOLF Colchester vice-captain Rob Cornish (16) produced the round of the year so far to win the Gazette Open Singles medal competition.

Playing off 16, his winning round of gross 83 (nett 67) included a creditable seven pars, helping him snatch victory by a single shot.

Second and third place needed countback to separate four players, with Paul McDermott (ten) finishing second with his gross 78 (nett 68).

McDermott carded ten pars, including six on the back-nine and a par four birdie, to see him head the chasing pack.

Andreas Fantousi (17) secured six pars to clinch third place.

Conor Garvey (eight) carded the lowest-gross of the day but missed out on a podium finish after finishing fourth by a narrow margin.

He carded 11 pars and a par-five birdie to finish ahead of fifth-placed Martin Kilbey (13) who was the last to card nett 68, pencilling in eight pars to boot.

A good-sized field turned out to compete in the Playgolf Senior’s monthly medal.

The extreme, wet, overnight conditions did not prevent the leaders from posting excellent scores.

Division one saw Peter Saye (15) record an outward gross 43 returning with 40 strokes including eight pars to win with nett 68.

Ron Gilzean (13) carded a nett 69, including six pars and a par-four birdie to finish second.

Alan Burke (17) was third on countback from Stephen Peeling (17) after both players carded nett 72.

Division two was headed by the in-form Bob Price (28) who produced a good score of nett 68, where he secured a trio of pars.

Senior vice-captain Robert Few (26) was second on countback, beating Brian Ruffell (26) in third after both players carded nett 69.

The recent heavy rain and great work by Playgolf Colchester's greenkeeping team has worked wonders on the course.

The much-needed rain has seen everywhere green up, after the recent dry spell saw links-like conditions prevail.

The wickedly, undulating greens, looked like a freshly-hoovered front-room carpet and were playing well.

With the rough up, the tight course was rewarding accurate tee shots and approach play but as usual, punishing wayward shots.
