LANCE Akins is confident that Witham Town have the personnel to push up the Ryman League division north table in the closing weeks of the season - but admits they need to have a bullying edge to do so.

Witham have been frustrated on a number of occasions recently as late goals have seen valuable points dropped and while there’s little danger of them being pulled back into the relegation fight the central defender admits they need to have the same mentality that they had in the early part of this season.

Following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Haringey Borough - that came with a 90th minute winner for the visitors - they had won just two of 16 league games, but there was a good response in midweek on a trip to VCD Athletic.

Akins was among the Witham scorers as they beat the Kent side 3-0 with an excellent performance.

Witham are due to head to Phoenix Sports on Saturday and Akins wants to see the team keep operating how they were in the earlier part of the season when they were bossing games and picking up some eye-catching victories like they did at VCD Athletic on Tuesday.

He said: “Late goals have hurt us at times this year, but at the start of the season we were bullying sides.

“We need to get that back and perhaps be a bit more ruthless.

“There is still so much to play for.

“We’re really looking to push up the table to get as high as we can.

“We are still building with a young side and we want to take progress into next season.

"There is not one player here who I would change for another player in this league as we all have quality, but we just need to bring them all together and put them on the pitch.”
