Former Norwich City youngster Jamar Loza featured for Colchester United’s under-23 side in their 2-0 triumph over Charlton Athletic this afternoon.

The 22-year-old forward was a trialist for the U’s in their Professional Development League Two clash, as Wayne Brown's side chalked up their first win of the season at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Loza, a Jamaica international who has also played for the likes of Coventry City and Southend United, is a free agent after being released by Norwich earlier this summer.

Colchester had the first chance of the game when Brendan Ocran forced Addicks keeper Dimitar Mitov into a good save at his near post after five minutes.

And Mitov was called into action again midway through the first half when he made a stunning save to deny Loza from point-blank range.

Loza got clear of the Charlton defence and tested Mitov again soon after while Ocran made a good interception to deny Charlton’s Mikhail Kennedy just before half-time, as the sides went in level at the break.

Loza forced another save from Mitov early in the second half and although Matty Carter’s shot flew wide for the visitors, it was Colchester who looked most likely to break the deadlock.

Sure enough, the U’s made the breakthrough just after the hour mark through Decarrey Sheriff, whose firm header proved too hot for Mitov to handle.

Charlton made a double change after going behind and tried to find a route back into the game, with substitute Chris Miller heading over and Cameron James making a good challenge to deny Joe Aribo.

But Colchester made their victory safe with eight minutes remaining when Chris Regis let fly from 30 yards and found the net.

Charley Edge fired just wide before the end, as the U's under-23s claimed victory.
