TOBY Bearne overcame some technical problems in wet qualifying to to claim twin podium finishes as the Maximumgroup.net VAG Trophy moved to Oulton Park.

It was the penultimate round of the championship that is considered to be a feeder for up-and-coming racers looking to compete in the British Touring Car Championship and the driver from Silver End picked up valuable points.

It meant Bearne, who is in his rookie year competing at this level of motorsport, stayed third in the overall standings ahead of the final round at Castle Combe at the beginning of October.

He placed his TeamHARD car ninth on the grid for the opening race at Oulton Park but had to contend with problems in a soggy qualifying session.

Bearne said: "I had a rocky start to the day in a wet qualifying session as my (windscreen) wipers stopped working.

"I only got three timed laps in but I still managed ninth on the start grid.

"Race one was an action packed race but I pushed hard and got myself back on the podium in third.

"I then started ninth on the grid again for race two, but moved up and held a steady second until the finish even with more rain coming down on slick tyres.

"So I finished with two podiums and lots of points on the board.

"I have to say a massive thank you to my new sponsor Steve at ST Tiling Works, as well as Tony Gillam, Kieran and everyone at TeamHARD.

"Roll on Castle Combe."
