COLCHESTER United striker Macauley Bonne has been watching videos of his goals in a bid to return for pre-season in tip-top scoring form.

The 20-year-old forward, who has just signed a new contract extension that keeps him at the U’s until the summer of 2018, was the club’s second highest goalscorer in all competitions last season after hitting the net nine times.

Bonne admits he would have liked to have scored with more regularity during the last campaign, despite only making 16 starts.

But the Zimbabwe international wants to make a big impression under new first-team coach John McGreal this season and is hoping viewing reruns of his Colchester strikes so far will help him hit the goal trail straight away.

Bonne told the Daily Gazette: “I think every striker’s aim is to go out and play games and score goals – that’s the objective and hopefully I’ll have a good chance of that, this season.

“I’d have really liked to have scored a few more goals than I did last season.

“I’ve been watching loads of video clips of the goals I scored.

“Mike (Still) the performance analyst at Colchester has given me loads of videos which I’ve gone through and watched and I’ve been looking at areas where I can improve.

“I’m raring to go and I can’t wait to get back on the pitch.”

Bonne has scored a total of 13 goals in 62 appearances, 22 of which were starts, since coming through Colchester’s youth system.

He played some of his football in the U’s academy under McGreal and the Ipswich-born striker says he is now looking forward to working under him at senior level.

“I’ve known John since I was 15 and I think that it helps that he knows me as a player,” said Bonne.

“I have a good relationship with him and I’ve enjoyed played under him in the past for the under-18s and under-21s.

“We’ve had a chat and he wants me to score 20 goals, next season which is a good target to have.

“He’s the kind of coach who will talk individually to players and as a former defender, he knows what it’s like to play against strikers and what makes it hard for defenders.

“He wants us to get promoted and I think that’s something that we can achieve.

“I can’t wait to get started against Hartlepool and then there’s also our first home game against Cambridge United with Joe Dunne coming back – I’m sure Louis (Dunne) is especially looking forward to that one!”
