THE Football League could be heading for a big shake-up which might have a major impact on Colchester United in future seasons.

Plans have been put proposed to restructure the league in favour of a five-division, 100-club system from 2019-20, meaning an extra division with 20 teams.

It would see the number of clubs in England increase from 92, with the Football League saying that it will tackle fixture congestion and boost clubs financially.

More games would be played at weekends and Bank Holidays, helping to remove fixture congestion and clashes and the league believe the new structure would drive bigger attendances and increase the quality on the pitch.

However, there are fears that the new structure with less home games for each club might mean a loss of revenue for teams like Colchester.

The Premier League and the Football Association have backed the proposal "in principle".

A total of 65 or more of the current 72 Football League clubs – including Colchester - must support the proposal for it to be successful.

If the new plans are implemented, relegation from the Football League would be scrapped in the 2018-19 campaign, before the restructure goes through.

A decision will be made at their annual general meeting in June 2017.
