Braintree Town's first player departure of the closed season may not have been in the direction that many Iron fans would have predicted with the exit of skipper Kenny Davis.

After six seasons with Braintree, the 28-year-old has left the club to join Vanarama National League rivals Boreham Wood.

While a number of fans have been predicting exits for players following former manager Danny Cowley to Lincoln City, it is Davis who has become the first departure from the squad that earned Braintree a third-place finish in the National League last season.

Davis joined the Iron in 2011 from Grays Athletic and was made captain by manager Alan Devonshire in their first campaign in the top flight.

He went on to earn England C honours during his time with the club, including captaining the national non-league side.

The tenacious midfielder made more than 200 appearances for Braintree and scored 40 goals for them, with his last coming from the penalty spot in the first leg of their Vanarama National League play-off semi-final at Grimsby earlier this month.

Braintree are expected to be announcing their new managerial appointment in the next few days after a week of interviewing prospective candidates for the position following Cowley's departure.
