COLCHESTER Amateur Boxing Club members were in fine form at the club's home show.

There was some fantastic action as the club hosted the Essex Schools and Eastern Counties Schools Championships.

The show boasted 19 bouts in total with five championship contests among the thrilling matches.

James Cotier made his amateur boxing debut against Banbury ABC's Jack Shaylar.

The Colchester boxer really showed his potential, staying composed and boxing a very mature contest.

Cotier drew his opponent’s lead, defending well and then landing well-timed, eye-catching punches.

The officials were so impressed they awarded Cotier with the trophy for best home boxer, an achievement that belies his experience but shows his potential.

Joe Davies, hoping to make his mark before boxing in an Eastern Counties Final next month, was first up for Colchester.

He fought a hard contest but dropped a point decision to Lowestoft ABC’s Jack Bacon.

Blake Marshall was unlucky to lose a close split decision against Northolt ABC's Tommy Lake.

Lake boxed well in the opening round but Blake came back strongly, pressing his opponent for every second until the final bell.

Alfie Smith turned in a good performance against unbeaten Stanley Whiskin, of Newham Boys Club.

This was a skilful contest with little to separate the two boxers but Whiskin won by a unanimous decision.

Colchester's Phoebe Davies showed that she has bounced back since losing the junior cadet championship finals last week on a fairly dubious decision.

She boxed last year’s schools champion Semeenah Toussaint, from Northolt ABC, in a hard-fought contest.

Toussaint pressing forwards but Davies caught her as she came in with sustained two-hand attacks, helping her secure a split decision win.

Colchester's Molly Yates was looking to build on her last two wins as she faced Rachel Evans, of Chalvedon ABC.

In a thrilling contest that had the crowd on their feet, both girls gave it everything they had.

In the end, Yates' cleaner and more hurtful punches secured her the win by unanimous decision.

Wasim Rach faced a difficult task against awkward southpaw Jordan Pedro from Northolt ABC.

Pedro landed some powerful shots from the back-foot stance, making it difficult for Rach to apply his usual pressure. Rach changed tactics and stayed with Pedro until the final bell but the Northolt boxer's heavy shots secured the win by unanimous decision.

Colchester ABC middleweight Cameron Renson closed the show, in the final bout of the evening.

He took on Banbury ABC's Joe Dennison in a well-matched contest, where both boxers used their experience and fitness to try and gain the edge.

In the end, Renson's sustained pressure and rugged tactics secured him the final win of the day, by unanimous decision.

Colchester’s schoolboy boxers Joe Davies, Blake Marshall, Alfie Smith and Tommy Reid will all be in action at next month's England Boxing Schools Championships.

The next round takes place in Sudbury, on May 8.
