FC CLACTON manager David Coyle is considering handing a call-up to talented youngster Callum Patterson.

The 16-year-old has impressed for the Seasiders’ under-18s and reserves and could be drafted into his squad for next week’s match at Long Melford.

Coyle says it is vital the club’s best young players – in terms of both ability and attitude – are given a pathway to play senior first-team football.

“Callum’s fit enough to perform at this level and playing regularly enough to be on top of his game,” said Coyle, whose side are without a match this Saturday.

“He’s got a bit of everything and can play in central midfield or up front.

“He’s physically well developed, for his age, and clever in terms of his movement and understanding of the game.

“He’s got a lot to learn but I like the fact he wants to listen and learn.

“To me, he’s coach-able and wants to become the best player he can.

“He’s already shown the commitment and drive to play senior football.

“He’s really impressed us and I don’t think he knows how good he could be, which is why he’s pushing for a starting place.”

Coyle is short on numbers for next week’s trip, especially in midfield, as Wayne Chapman is suspended, Jack Clampin unavailable and Kyelan Marvell injured.

Full-back Parris Newland is also a major doubt due to work commitments.

“We’re very light, especially in central midfield and in terms of having a physical presence,” said Coyle.

“But we’re keeping a careful eye on the reserves and have identified one or two who are playing well and keen to progress.

“We have to look after them and keep hold of them, assuming they have the right attitude and a desire to play first-team football.

“It’s important we find a way to bring these lads through.”
