There were mixed fortunes for Braintree’s Cable Racing team of driver Kevin Cable and his Colchester-based passenger Harry Payne at the penultimate round of the British Formula One Sidecar Championship at Silverstone.

The pair had not raced at the full circuit before, but qualified in 20th place in a field consisting of former World, British and Isle of Man TT champions, however, the following day’s race was marred by clutch problems on their Yamaha-powered 1,000cc machine.

Cable and Payne had to retire, but they bounced back the next day as they finished 13th to move into 21st place in the championship.

Cable said: “We improved our times in each session and I was disappointed that we had problems with the clutch in Saturday’s race.”

Payne added “I was really worried in the second race. I could see some fluid coming out, didn’t know what it was but we kept going.”

The team did come away with some silverware, winning the Bill Barrowcliff Trophy for the best turned-out sidecar at the meeting, while the last round of the season is at Brands Hatch.
