Colchester United could offer Drey Wright the chance to spearhead their attack after he impressed in a more central role for their under-21 side.

U’s boss Tony Humes was keen to see winger Wright play in a centre-forward role in the club’s Professional Development League Two match at Bristol City, on Monday.

Wright was outstanding against the Robins, scoring twice and hitting a post in their 2-0 win.

And with skipper Chris Porter still out injured and the U’s frustrated in their attempts to bring in reinforcements, the former Colchester youth-team player may fit the bill.

U’s under-21 coach John McGreal said: “Drey was utilised as a number nine and he did really well.

“He scored two and hit a post and he could have scored four.

“Drey played 85 minutes against Bristol City and has now played twice in less than a week for the under-21s.

“He needed to get that extra fitness under his belt and he’s looking more and more like himself.

“The two goals he scored will give him the world of confidence and the goal he scored from open play was a hell of a finish.

“I’d spoken to Tony about it and he wanted to play him up front as a number nine.

“We had Decarrey Sheriff and Tariq Issa out injured and are a bit light in that area.

“Drey’s been predominantly a wide player through the youth ranks but we knew that he could play there and be effective so who knows?”

Wright is still building up his fitness after missing most of the last campaign with a serious knee injury, his second in the last two years.

The 20-year-old has so far made one appearance this season, as a second-half substitute in the U’s Capital One Cup defeat at the hands of Reading.

Wright is hoping he can put his injury woes behind him and be a pivotal player for boss Humes, this season.

“I’ve known the manager for a long time and I think he knows what I’m capable of,” said Wright.

“Hopefully I can stay fit and prove myself to him, in terms of getting a starting place in the team and impressing.

“It helped that I’ve been through the rehabilitation before - I knew from previous experience that it would take time to work harder and get back to where I want to be.”
