Sydney Wilson is ready to face one of world snooker’s current greats in only his second tournament since joining the sport’s elite as a professional player.

The 25-year-old potter from Rivenhall only turned professional at the end of May after winning his Tour Card and in just his second outing, will be facing former world number one Judd Trump in a televised match at the end of this month.

The Rivenhall man and Trump will battle in the third round of the Kaspersky Lab Riga Open in Latvia in a match that will be shown live on the Eurosport TV channel at noon (British time) on July 31.

Wilson, who practices at the Stepfield Snooker Club in Witham and has played for them in the Braintree Snooker League, opened his time in the pro ranks by winning through to the second round at the Australian Goldfields Open Qualifiers in June.

However, he knows that facing a player who has compiled more than 300 century breaks during his career will be a significant step up for him.

“Clearly he is one of the top players in the sport and that will make me a massive underdog, but that does take some of the pressure off in one respect,” said Wilson.

“However, another respect is that it will be a televised match so there will be pressure there.

“It will be my second time on television after I played Jimmy White in a match in Bulgaria last October.

“The art of any sport is to play the same under pressure as you do in practice, but when you haven’t experienced those situations as much as someone like Judd Trump then it is difficult.

“I’ve not really had as high a profile game as this.

“Playing Jimmy White was the closest as he’s a legend, but not such a current high-profile player.

“Judd Trump is right up there with the best.

“He’s been a World Championship finalist and UK Champion so he’s one of the best.

“It’s his potting that everyone worries about when playing him so you just can’t leave him any shots.

“Anyone who knows snooker knows what a phenomenal potter and break builder he is, but his all-round game is so strong and his attacking game is great.

“I know I’ll have to be at the top of my game, however, over the last few years, I’ve figured out ways to win when I’m not playing great.

“The key against top players is that when you get a chance, don’t miss the easy ones and you will stay in with a chance.”

With the game against Trump being televised to a potential global audience on Eurosport, Wilson said he has two advertising spaces available on the waistcoat he will be wearing. If anyone would like to contact Wilson about sponsorship opportunities, he can be contacted at sydneywilsonjr@gmail.com
