Alex Lynn ended his GP2 Series weekend at Silverstone still sitting fifth in the overall standings.

The 21-year-old racing driver from Dunmow drove from 12th to fifth place in Saturday’s feature race before finishing sixth on the road in the sprint race on the following day.

Having had a quick day in the heat of feature race day, Lynn just didn’t seem to be able to find the same pace in his DAMS Racing car in Sunday’s cooler conditions.

A lack of grip from his tyres and degradation in the latter stages meant much of his sprint race action was spent watching his mirrors and staging a rearguard action against quicker-paced cars behind.

Lynn had made a great start from fourth on the grid and moved up a place in the first corner but quickly lost it to his team-mate Pierre Gasly and proceeded to race in fourth position.

He was passed by an Alexander Rossi who had been flying all weekend in his Racing Engineering car but the American had left the track limits to get past the Essex driver.

It afforded Rossi a five-second post-race penalty but he was allowed to stay on the track rather than having a drive-through which would have dropped him back further.

With pace a problem in his DAMS car, Lynn was pressured from behind by Nick Yelloly, so that instead of chasing after Rossi, much of his race was confined to a defence of his position against the Hilmer Motorsport driver.

However, as it headed into the final few laps, it became feature race winner Sergey Sirotkin, of Rappax, who managed to get past Yelloly and put the pressure on Lynn.

The DAMS driver was having increasingly big problems with grip from his tyres and with Yelloly having earned the place back from Sirotkin, he was able to challenge Lynn once again.

This time, the Essex man didn’t have anything left in his tyres to defend his position and slipped down to sixth on the final lap as Yelloly finally made the pass into the Brooklands corner.

Lynn's sixth position meant he stayed fifth in the overall championship after his weekend at Silverstone.
