Alex Lynn is hoping that home comforts will give him the “cocktail of extra speed” to claim GP2 Series honours at Silverstone this weekend.

The 21-year-old racing driver from Dunmow knows that competing on home soil and in front of predominantly British fans will give him an added advantage as he looks to strengthen his position in the GP2 standings.

It has been an up and down start to his time in Formula One’s main feeder series, with podium finishes in Spain and last time out in Austria in contrast to outings in Bahrain and Monaco when Lynn failed to register a point.

Despite finishing third in the main feature race in Austria two weeks ago, he felt the pace of his DAMS Racing car warranted an even bigger points haul from the Red Bull Ring as he stayed fifth in the overall series standings.

However, he is hoping for a good showing as he returns to a Silverstone circuit that he loves driving at and where he finished second last year on his way to claiming the GP3 Series title.

The two GP2 Series races on Saturday and Sunday will form a support to the Formula One British Grand Prix and Lynn, who is also a development driver for the Williams Martini Racing F1 team, knows what the effect of home support can have.

“It is massive it really is,” he said.

“Sometimes psychology gets overlooked in motor racing but going to your home Grand Prix does put fire in your belly to get a result.

“Coming from the weekend we had in Austria and knowing what could have been with the pace we had there, it makes me more determined to go to my home race and do what I know we’re capable of doing.

“The effect being at home is massively noticeable.

“It’s easy for people to say that it’s not but there is a special something.

“It’s very hard to describe.

“When you are in your home country and at your home track you feel more comfortable and maybe you have a smidge more confidence and arrogance that comes out as a cocktail of extra speed.

“That is the best way I can describe it."
