Witham Cricket Club captain Jake Wakelin says his team are making the rest of the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship’s top flight “sit up and take notice”.

An eight-wicket win against Coggeshall means Witham have won their opening two games of the division one campaign and skipper Wakelin feels beating the team who finished second in the league last year is an important statement.

He said: “People are starting to sit up and take notice of us now.

“We’ve just beaten the team who only missed out on the title by a couple of points last year and we’re on a massive high at the moment.

“We just want next weekend to come.

“We’re enjoying being at the top end of the league and are buzzing off it.

“Everyone wants to train hard and then be involved in another big game against Hadleigh on Saturday.

“There’s not really one area that we’re relying on to do well.

“We have six or seven bowlers who can all bowl ten overs and we look so strong in the batting so we bat all the way down to nine, ten or even 11."
