IT was a busy weekend for Harwich and Dovercourt Rugby Club.

Although the regular league season is over, they held their traditional captain versus president’s XV contest at Low Road.

The skippers on the day were Josh Leeks, for the captain’s team, and Jack Cairns, for the president’s XV.

In a very open, free-flowing and high-scoring game, there was little between the two teams at the end.

The president’s side just edged it 58-55.

On Saturday evening, players, supporters and friends of the club attended the end-of-season awards dinner at the Park Pavilion.

Nearly 200 were present and the night featured speeches from club chairman Barry Male, together with ladies’ coach Walter Blacker, senior coaches Shane Manning and Jim Hayter, as well as club captain Kyle Hutchins and second-team skipper Oly Bray.

They all gave out thanks and reflected on a season of success.

Harwich’s first team secured a strong second place in Eastern Counties League division two south, losing just one game and securing the Suffolk Plate after beating Haverhill.

Harwich’s second team had a mixed season but still managed to bag a strong third place in division three south.

They have developed a strong resource of players to give the club more depth.

They continue to develop the emerging youth and newer players into the club, while also providing opportunities for those occasional and older players.

Harwich Owls, meanwhile, have completed their first league season and finished a very credible fourth in Woman’s NC South East East 2.

Awards were presented during the evening and these went to: Clubman of the Year - Simon Woodley and Ian Woodward; Coaches’ Player - Robert Edgar; Coaches’ Most Improved - John Skargon; Players’ Player (first team) - 1 Greg Woodley, 2 Josh Jones; Players’ Player (second team) - 1 Simon Pitham, 2 Sean Mills; Owls’ Coaches’ Player - Natasha Bray and Naomi Dobner; Owls Players’ Player - 1 Abi Cutts, 2 Sophia Tricker.
