Richard Shackell was a comfortable winner in Colchester Golf Club’s CHAPS stableford competition.

Shackell led the field in with 41 points to triumph with three points at the charity event for the local men’s health cancer charity.

Shackell’s golf was in direct contrast to the dull weather conditions, in which 76 players competed.

But his round lit up the course with three birdies from his 20 handicap giving him four points, on each of the holes.

They helped conceal the odd blemish in an otherwise steady round, to give Shackell his comfortable win.

Richard Arnold (28) was a clear runner-up with 38 points ahead of Barry Haley (11) and Andrew Archer (14), who both recorded 37 points.

Stephen Bozier (12) was fifth and David Drake (16) finished sixth, with both players scoring 36 points.

In the ladies stableford, Heather Dennis won with 33 points from her 19 handicap with in-form Sheena Nunny (17) runner-up, with 32 points.

Dennis’s main strength proved her par threes and she was just one over par, after playing all four.

And Nunny was also just one over par on the par threes courtesy of a birdie on the 16th.

Roberta Bodsworth (21) was third overall on countback ahead of Joan Cotterill (26) and Catherine Chick (31), after all three players recorded 31 points.

Colchester GC’s men were beaten by Woolston Manor, in the Norman Plum Trophy.

They lost 3½-2½ in the higher handicap county competition, where the teams played three matches at home and three matches away.

Unusually, it was the away teams from both clubs that scored best.

Colchester’s away team won 2½-½, thanks to a two-up victory from Andy Higgleton and Mark Hills and a 6/5 victory by Mike Horley and Peter Robinson.

That was added to by Steve Holland and Malcolm Easton halving the final match.

But at home it was a different story for Colchester, where they lost all three of their close-fought matches.

Mick Potter and Chris Scott went down 2/1 and George Shelmerdine and Steve Parlett were defeated on the last, before Geoff Lawrenson and Reg Allen lost 3/1.
