George Moncur believes he is close to recapturing his best form after returning to Colchester United’s starting line-up.

Moncur has only just returned to the U’s team after being laid low by a bout of tonsillitis, at the start of the calendar year.

The 21-year-old was laid low by the illness and managed just one start for Colchester in a two-month period, prior to last week’s win over Yeovil Town.

However, Moncur has now started back-to-back games for the U’s and scored in their 2-2 draw with Gillingham, last weekend.

He said: “I think I’m just starting to get back to the kind of form I had before I was ill.

“I’m just trying to work hard and get back to where I was.

“I had tonsillitis but before that I had a week of flu, so that was leading up to it.

“It really knocked me out and I was out for around a month.

“I tried to keep going and there were a few games where I played but I was just knackered.

“You’re not going to get anywhere like that but touch wood, I’m getting back to where I was, which is good.”

Moncur’s strike against Gillingham was his first in the league since last September.

The former West Ham United youngster had netted three times in his first eight league games for the U’s, this season.

“As a midfielder, it’s always good to score goals,” said Moncur, who has scored five times for Colchester.

“You catch the eye with that and if I’m being honest, I would like to score a few more.

“I’d like to get myself up to that next level with my goals but it’s all going to happen eventually, I think.

“I just have to keep working hard and stick at it.”

Meanwhile, Moncur is confident that Colchester have what it takes to beat the drop.

The U’s lie four points adrift of safety in League One, with eight games remaining.

Moncur added: “We’ve got a great set of players here and we’re all confident - I’m sure we can do it.

“It’s a big Easter coming up for us, with two games in four days.

“They’re crunch games and we want six points from them but I think if we can get at least four points, that will be good.

“After that, there’s only six games left.

“We have a break of nearly two weeks without a game so we’ll get the rest in and train hard.”
