Life's a stroll for those taking part in walking football at Colchester United.

The slowed down version of the beautiful game is a rising phenomenon being played by men and women up and down the country.

Former U’s duo Steve Dowman and Barry Smith both tried their hand at the pursuit when the club recently hosted their first session of the popular format.

Walking football was only invented six years ago but there are already more than 200 registered clubs all over England.

Running and slide tackling are both banned in the activity, which is aimed at anyone aged 55 or over or those with disabilities.

It is seen as a way of keeping over-50s in football, boosting fitness levels and at the same time, meeting new people.

Colchester United community sports participation manager Corin Haines said: “The aim is to get more people participating, making new friends and using the stadium’s facilities.

“The format is half an hour of basic structured skills and the next session is a game.

“The structure is similar to a normal session but the tempo is obviously not quite as fast.

“Tactics are important as is recovery.

“We want people to have fun in an environment where they’re meeting new people and taking part in a physical activity.”

The U’s are holding weekly walking football sessions every Thursday between 5pm and 6pm, at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

They are on the lookout for more players to take part.

The cost is £4 per person.
