COLCHESTER Rugby Club chairman Karl O'Brien is hoping their excellent start to the season will attract more numbers to their games at Mill Road.

The Blacks have been in fine form so far in London League One North, winning all three of their games so far and racking up 177 points in the process.

Anthony O'Riordan's side are hoping to make a return to the National League after a two-season absence, following their relegation in 2017.

And ahead of Colchester's home game with Old Priorians this weekend, O'Brien is keen to see more people turn up to see the table-toppers in action.

O'Brien told the Daily Gazette: "It would be lovely to see as many people as possible at the game on Saturday and there's always room for more people to come and watch.

"We'd love to see more people come and watch, whether it's members or people who live close by.

"Anyone who comes is most welcome including those who have never been before - they're likely to be treated to some fast-flowing rugby.

"I don't think people who come and watch us will be disappointed.

"Our home form was so important last season and it's already proving to be the case, this season.

"We didn't lose any of our home games last season and I don't think any opposition team looks forward to coming to Colchester."

Colchester are currently joint top with Rochford Hundred and North Walsham, with all three teams having won all of their matches so far.

"It's very early days yet but we're very pleased with the way that things have started and it's a good foundation to build from," said O'Brien.

"We've played some very nice running rugby and we're getting towards full strength now, which is encouraging.

"Most of our players are home grown and I hope that there's still more to come from the team.

"We now have a run of very tough games coming up but the start that we've made gives us something to build from.

"It's good to have a solid start and it's always good to have the points on the board.

"We have our feet firmly on the ground but the aim is to get back into the National League - that's the same objective for everyone at the club.

"When we previously won promotion to the National League, the club had never done so before and hadn't been in that position before.

"It was a little bit of a surprise when we got there but that won't be the case should we do it again."
