TYRONE Stansfield put exam revision to one side to continue proving himself as one of the fastest racers in the birelArt UK Karting Series super elite class.

The Cressing youngster is preparing for GCSEs at Alec Hunter Academy, but took time out to claim second place in the final at Clay Pigeon in Dorset.

Having only stepped up into the super elites this year, it meant Stansfield bettered his third-place finish in the previous round to sit second in the overall standings after three rounds.

A good qualifying session meant Stansfield placed himself third on the grid for the opening heat race and that was a position he maintained as he set the fastest lap and finished just 1.6 seconds behind the driver in second.

Stansfield knew the pace was there to challenge for the top two, though, and he pressed all the way in the pre-final before finishing just one hundredth of a second behind the second-placed kart to set up an intriguing final.

He made a disappointing start, though, and dropped back to sixth, before battling through the pack and, after the second and third-placed drivers both went off, he was back challenging for the lead.

The Cressing youngster said: "I did manage to close the gap a bit but the leader responded and kept the gap comfortable for him.

"I felt I wasn't able to catch him with the time remaining, so just put each lap together carefully and finished in second but only 1.77 seconds behind first.

"So it was a good weekend all round.

"I had improved on last round's overall position of third to a second this weekend and I was ecstatic to have secured a second place on my second elite round.

"My Dad did an excellent job with my kart set-up and that allowed me to achieve these results, but now I am revising hard for my upcoming GCSEs over the next few weeks."

Stansfield thanked his sponsors K & B Tatam, G & B Finch, Kingwell Environmental and BODYFIT4TRAINING as well as Alec Hunter Academy for their continued support.
