WITHAM Hockey Club hosted a special get together for a celebratory match to mark the retirement of their president Roger Wacey.

Wacey and his company Printwize have been sponsors and supporters of Witham Hockey Club for many years and he has been president of the club since 1999.

In his 18 years in the role, he has seen the club go through various stages of growth and success before going into some decline due to the fact that they had no local artificial pitch for several years.

Incoming president Bob Ward paid tribute to Wacey and said: "Our Club was very lucky in having a president who supported us so well through a difficult time, not only with positive encouragement, but on occasions financially.

"In no small way, he ensured that Witham Hockey Club continued in being and is now such a thriving and vibrant club for the Town.

"It was deemed fitting to have a game on our fantastic local pitch, which Braintree District Council upgraded at the start of this season."

Wacey was presented with a shirt by Witham Hockey Club chairman Jane Bellehewe to mark his years in office and exchanged testimonial pennants with fourth team captain and youth co-ordinator Lee Bedingfield prior to the game.

The game ended in a 7-6 win for the fourth team but captain Wacey did score an excellent goal from the penalty spot.

Wacey said: "What a lovely day.

"I have been associated with Witham Hockey Club for many years, initially as a player before I became their president, which has been an honour.

"It is absolutely great that the club is still growing and has a strong youth section and the use of such a superb council facility, which should ensure their continued survival for many years to come – I wish Jane and the whole club every success."
