DAN Lawrence has been named in the England XI squad for a two-day match against a Cricket Australia XI on Saturday.

The Essex batsman, who captained the Lions to a win against a Western Australia XI in a T20 fixture this week, has been promoted to the squad along with five others.

Moeen Ali, who has played in the first two Ashes Test matches, will captain the team at Richardson Park, in Perth.

Lawrence is now based in Perth along with 11 others including Ben Duckett, Keaton Jennings and Mark Wood.

It follows a impressive display as skipper, having scored 28 not out from 23 balls, as the Lions won by nine wickets.

And, having been named Lions captain for the first time, Lions and England batting coach Graham Thorpe, praised the efforts of the 20-year-old.

“Dan Lawrence was probably a bit surprised to be asked to captain, but Andy Flower likes to share it around – and I thought he did really well,” he said.

“As with Liam Livingstone the other day, it’s good that the guys want to do it when they’re given the chance, and Dan showed good decisiveness out in the field.

“Then he came in and took us home with Clarkey – he’s played well out here, and I think he’ll have got a lot out of the trip.”
