IT was a debut to remember for Joe Gilzean and Ash Moakes after they were victorious on their first appearance in the Playgolf Colchester Gazette Pairs competition.

The pair carded the best back nine to take a three-way countback decision, after carding an outstanding 42 points.

Dave Garner and Steve Woods took second place from doubles partners Stephen Allen and Trevor Barnett in third.

Miguel Ruiz-Fernandez (23) carded an unassailable stableford score of 50 points (nett 56) to win the members weekend swindle by an amazing ten points.

His superb score of gross 79 was made up of an amazing nine pars and nine bogies.

Ruiz-Fernandez's unbelievable 14-under par round (12-under Competition Scratch Score) saw him receive an well-deserved five-shot handicap cut to play off 18, next time out.

Adrian Binns can feel unlucky not to win with his superb 40 points while Paul Addison was third, with 38 points.

A large field turned out to contest the first of the three rounds of the Playgolf Seniors Masters tournament.

Day one proved to be a tightly contested affair, with several players posting sub-par rounds.

John Edgell (21) led the way by two shots, with an excellent nett 65.

Steve Loran (11) came second on countback from Dave Ruxton (22), after both carded nett 67.

Loran also carded the lowest gross score with his gross 78.

A tightly-packed field should see the next two rounds provide an exciting finale.

Playgolf Ladies’ captain Maureen Dale staged her newly-introduced Trilby Challenge competition where everyone wore their Trilby hats.

The format was an 18-hole stableford round followed by a four-hole strokeplay play-off between the top four players on the leaderboard.

Ruth Amoss won the stableford with an impressive 37 points after finishing four points ahead of nearest rival, Roz Cole.

Ann Longman and Gina Macmillan were third and fourth, on 32 points.

The play-off resulted in Amoss taking overall victory with a nett 20 followed by Cole and Macmillan, each carding nett 21.

A sudden death matchplay situation at the fifth hole put Macmillan in second and Cole third while Ann Longman took fourth with nett 23.
