Kyel Reid is aiming to get his Colchester United spell up and running again – after bagging his first-ever senior brace.

The 29-year-old, who is on loan at the U’s from Coventry City, scored two goals in a match for the first time in his professional career in his side’s 2-2 draw at Grimsby Town on Tuesday night.

It was Reid’s first start for Colchester since September 2 after he had been sidelined with a hip injury, which kept him out for three League Two matches.

And after achieving a new career milestone, the former West Ham United youngster says he is now hungry for more games – and goals.

Reid said: “There’s not been many games in my career where I’ve scored twice or more in my league professional career.

“It’s always good to get a brace and hopefully, there are many more to come.

“I felt the best since I’ve been here (against Grimsby).

“It’s been stop-start for me with the injuries but I said to the gaffer and the physio that I’d rather get it right first before coming back in, as I didn’t want to break down again.

“I felt fine and I didn’t want to come off but the manager was thinking ahead to Saturday (against Yeovil).”

Reid netted in either half against Grimsby, taking his overall goal tally for Colchester to three since his arrival last month.

Reid said: “We’d been watching the set plays and we saw their keeper likes to gamble quite a bit with the corners, so I thought I’d try and catch him out and go for goal.

“He punched it back into my path – I thought he would catch it but when I saw it go through his legs I thought ‘it’s going to turn for us here’.

“The second goal started with a good bit of play between me and Kano (Kane Vincent-Young) who I think has been terrific since the start of the season.

“It was a good interchange between us and I found myself in the box and chopped it inside and then saw a gap to curl the ball with the outside of my boot, into the bottom corner.

“There’s no better feeling when you see the ball hit the back of the net.”

Colchester switched to a 4-4-2 formation for their game at Grimsby, a change from the 3-5-2 system usually adopted by head coach John McGreal.

Reid said the players felt comfortable with the approach and that it played a part in their improved away performance.

Reid added: “I think the system change and personnel suited everyone – we looked a lot more solid and with Lofty (Doug Loft) in the side and his experience and at the back and front.

“I think it suited us well with two banks of four, especially away from home.

“Everyone knows their jobs and their positions and it shows togetherness.

“Overall, it was a better team performance and it’s only a matter of time before the penny drops for us and we start to go on a run and get the wins that we need.

“It felt like a defeat for us because we’d been 2-1 up away from home and we felt like we were going to get the win.

“I thought we would have deserved to win but the game changed with the injury to Sammie (Szmodics) and they started putting more balls into our box.

“To concede so late on and to a penalty as well is always going to dampen the mood but on the positive side, we got a point and we stopped the rot that we’ve been having away from home so hopefully we can just take the point into the Yeovil game and get the points that we need.”
