John McGreal is hoping the away point Colchester United gained in their 2-2 draw at Grimsby Town will be the start of many for them on the road this season.

The U's ended a run of four defeats on their travels at Blundell Park and had looked on course to win following Kyel Reid's brace, only for substitute Sam Jones to bag a late equaliser for the Mariners from the spot, at Blundell Park.

JJ Hooper had earlier equalised for Grimsby but it was Colchester's first point of the campaign on their travels and head coach McGreal now wants them to build on the draw.

McGreal said: "It's a good point on our travels and hopefully, it's the start of many.

“I thought that we’d done enough to nick it but then a little cross comes in and they got the penalty.

“I’m disappointed in that respect but on the other part of the game, I was really pleased with the boys.

“You could see that we put a lot of heart and endeavour into the performance.

“We asked something different from them and I think we saw that.

“We got a good lead away from home and it lasted all of a couple of minutes.

“But when we got ourselves back into it we showed composure under a ton of pressure and I thought we could see it out.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t but it’s a good point for us on the road.

"They put in a top shift and now it's about recovery to go to Yeovil."

Colchester will check on the condition of Sammie Szmodics, after he was stretched off with a leg injury at Grimsby.

Szmodics had only been on the field for a few minutes after coming on as a substitute before suffering the injury.

McGreal said: "It's the same leg as he did last year.

"We need to have a look at it over the next 48 hours.

"It's a bit of a sore one but fingers crossed, it's not too much damage."
