THE third round of Braintree and Bocking Angling Society's evening matches went ahead with five competitors at Notley and it turned out to be a low-weight affair.

Dave Smith had two F1s with silvers to win the round with 6-2-8 from Pete Thompson, who had one F1 and silvers for 5-0-0.

The Friday match produced better weights and Bob Reed, on peg six, landed four carp with F1s and silvers for a comfortable victory, weighing in 25-14-0.

Second place went to Bernard Huxter with one carp and F1s for 18-1-0.

The Sunday Sweep, also at Notley, produced a second win for Reed, who again drew peg six.

Only one carp was landed but ten F1s gave him a total of 25-15-0.

Bob Percival weighed 17-5-0 in second, with John Daniels close behind with 16-13-0 for third.

On Sunday, the Billericay Club host the first round of the new season`s Essex Inter-club League at Southminster Pits.

Meanwhile, the funeral of Don Smith took place last Wednesday with several local anglers attending.

The original Braintree Aces match group, which Don helped form is now down to two surviving members in Tony Fuller and Pete Thompson who both attended, as did Andy Smith who joined later and he made the journey from his home in Leicester.

Don's last club was Carriers AC and they came in their numbers to pay their respects, while his other passion, chess, was also well represented with members attending from the chess club.

Don was a good organiser and he will most certainly be remembered as such for many years to come.
