BRAINTREE Cricket Club’s “spirit, fight and will to win” came to the fore to carry them to a thrilling victory last weekend and captain Will Jackson now wants to see it on full show as they go back on the road on Saturday.

The Dolphins staged a stunning late comeback to recover from a seemingly lost cause and grab a six-run win against Haverhill as their great home form continued in Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one.

Braintree have now won three of their four games at Panfield Lane, however, their away form has let them down so far, with no wins coming on the road and Jackson is hoping the confidence gained from a dramatic victory last weekend can be taken into Saturday’s game at Frinton seconds.

Jackson, whose team sit second from bottom, said: “Our away form is costing us at the moment and that’s the reason why we are where we are in the table.

“We need to address that, but that comes with confidence and wins at home will build that.”

The manner of the latest success as much as the result itself will be a huge boost to Braintree’s players.

Despite a maiden division one century for Chris Leech leading them to a score of 285 for seven, Haverhill had Braintree on the ropes in their reply as they got themselves into a position where they required just 25 runs to claim victory off 14 overs and with five wickets in hand.

But that was where Braintree’s spirit shone through as they removed danger man Adam Dellar and swiftly ripped through Haverhill’s bottom order to win by six runs.

Jackson added: “It was a bit of a thriller.

“It was good for Chris Leech to get his maiden division one hundred and we felt 285 was about a par score on the Braintree wicket, but they looked comfortable in their chase.

“However, once Adam Dellar was out, they just collapsed and it was good for the boys to get the reward as they carried on fighting and the final six wickets fell for 19 runs.

“I think it shows the spirit, the fight and the will to win is definitely there and we will scrap for every single point in every game.

“It was a nice result to get after the start we’ve had this year. It shows how confident we are at home to chase or defend a score and it will be nice now to take that confidence into away games.”

Jackson said he expected Josh Newman to be available for Saturday’s trip to Frinton.

He said: “Frinton are only a few points above us so we see it as a winnable game and one that we head into full of confidence.”

Meanwhile, the Braintree Saturday first-team skipper was also in the runs the following day as he was in prolific form in Braintree’s T20 victory against Kelvedon in the North Essex Cricket League.

Jackson bludgeoned 129 from 54 balls as Braintree won a high-scoring encounter by eight runs. and he is looking to carry that form into Saturday cricket.

“It was good to get some runs,” he said.

“I got away with a few, but it would be nice to transfer that into Saturdays as I have kept getting out in the 30s this year.

“I’ve done it six times so far and I want to push on so I think it’s a case of being a bit more clever with my batting.”
