Former Colchester United favourite Gavin Massey says he will be cheering his old club on at Wembley if they reach this season’s League Two play-off final.

But the skilful attacker has warned the promotion-chasing U’s that his current club Leyton Orient will be doing everything they can to beat them this weekend, despite their demoralising relegation.

Massey, who spent four and a half years as a Colchester player before leaving last summer, is set to sit out the Brisbane Road clash because of a hamstring injury.

But the 24-year-old says his O’s team-mates are targeting victory in their final home game of the season, despite experiencing a dispiriting few months both on and off the field.

Massey told the Daily Gazette: “We’ll be playing for pride and wanting to win.

“It’s our last home game of the season and you don’t know what you’re playing for, whether it’s a contract at Leyton Orient or elsewhere.

“Despite what’s going on, you have to dig in and give everything you have.

“I’d be lying if I said we were sky high at the moment because that’s not the case and it hasn’t been for a while.

“But we have senior pros who have been looking to keep spirits up as much as possible and I’m sure our younger boys in particular will be desperate to win and put themselves out there and do their best.

“Over the last few weeks, they’ve done really well in the circumstances.

“It’s been a hard season and a hard month in particular but I think we have to go out there and enjoy it on Saturday.”

Colchester need a victory at Orient to keep their play-off hopes alive, with John McGreal’s side lying three points off the top seven with two games remaining.

“As a Leyton Orient player, I obviously want us to win on Saturday,” said Massey, who made 178 league and cup appearances for Colchester, scoring 21 goals.

“But after that, I want Colchester to make the play-offs and if they do get to Wembley, I’ll be there cheering them on.

“I’ll never have a bad word to say about Colchester.

“They’ve done so much for my career.

“I’m close with a lot of the boys at Colchester and I’ve been asking them how they’ve been getting on.

“I think John McGreal has done a great job there in his first season in charge and they have a momentum that I think most teams will be scared of.

“I think Colchester are going the right way about it and I think there will only be good things for them around the corner.”
