Alex Gilbey has left Colchester United for Championship new boys Wigan Athletic on a three-year deal.
The former Gilberd School pupil, who was out of contract at the Weston Homes Community Stadium this summer, has signed for the Latics for an undisclosed compensation fee after declining the offer of a new contract with the U's and ending his nine-year stay with the club.
Gilbey made more than 100 appearances for Colchester since emerging through their academy ranks and making his senior debut for the club in October, 2012.
The 21-year-old was a regular in their starting line-up last season and skippered them on numerous occasions but could not prevent them from being relegated to League Two.
Now the talented midfielder is looking to make the next step in his career with Wigan, who won promotion from League One as champions last season.
