ANDY Scrivener proved to be an inspired substitution as he came off the bench to snatch the winner for the Manager's team in the showpiece game at Halstead Town's charity day event.

A big crowd turned up on FA Cup final day to see the game between a Vets side and a Manager's team on the pitch at Rosemary Lane.

The match was a tight one throughout with the balance swinging towards the Manager's side as they introduced some first-team players off the bench.

The Vets had been in the ascendancy to begin with and they opened the scoring with just five minutes on the clock and had a decent shout for a penalty.

The introduction of a number of first-team players after 20 minutes saw the balance swing, though, and the game was back on level terms by the interval.

The Manager's team stuck with a stronger line-up in second half and got themselves in front, courtesy of first-team boss Mark Benterman, but the Vets did not give up and managed to get an equaliser.

However, the deciding goal came with ten minutes on the clock as substitute Scrivener got the final touch on an effort that just evaded the clutches of the Vets keeper to bring a memorable victory for the Manager's side.

Off the field, the event was well supported by the families of players, managers and supporters and they were entertained not just by the football, and the FA cup final which followed, but with bouncy castles, a barbecue and there was also a raffle.

In total, £550 was raised to be shared between the two nominated charities - the Emmerson Fund and the Brain Tumour Charity.
