New Colchester United signing Callum Harriott insists it is only a matter of time before his new club start to move up the table.

But the on-loan winger admits they need to chalk up their first win of the season, sooner rather than later.

Harriott made his U’s bow in their 2-2 draw with Scunthorpe United last weekend, barely 24 hours after arriving at the club from Charlton Athletic.

The 21-year-old has chalked up three assists in his opening two games for Colchester, after also featuring in their 3-2 Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat at Northampton Town, last Tuesday.

And he is confident their maiden league victory is just around the corner.

Harriott said: “I only came in last Friday but I know we have a great team, who wants to work hard.

“Everyone wants to win and when you have team-mates like that, the team will do well.

“I can’t see us sitting near the bottom for too long but we know that we need to get a win.

“Once you get that, you can push on and get more.

“The boys have got good character and we have a good team spirit.

“We stuck at it (against Scunthorpe) to come back to 2-2 and we were disappointed that we didn’t win, because that’s what we need.

“But there are positives to take from the game.

“I didn’t score so that’s a negative but I won’t let my head go down on that and I got an assist.

“Sometimes, you have to just keep digging deep and that will come.”

Harriott is hungry to play matches for Colchester, having found his opportunities limited at parent club Charlton so far this season.

The former England under-19 international has so far featured just twice for the Addicks, where he has been since the age of nine.

“All I want to do is play football, because that’s my passion,” said Harriott, who has made 76 league and cup appearances for Charlton.

“At Charlton, sometimes I’m playing and sometimes I’m not and nothing is said.

“I want to try and get back to doing what I do best, which is playing, scoring and assisting and hopefully move forward with my career.

“Game time is important and when you are selected, you just have to do as well as you can for yourself, for the manager and for the club.”
