Frankie Kent's first-team return after a long injury lay-off was a boost on an otherwise disappointing night for Colchester United, according to boss Tony Humes.

Kent made his first competitive start for the U's for ten months in their 3-2 Johnstone's Paint Trophy reverse at Northampton Town, on Tuesday night.

The young centre-half, who missed much of last season with a knee injury, completed 90 minutes for Colchester in the first-round tie at Sixfields and boss Humes is glad to have Kent available again.

Humes said: “It’s great to see Frankie back.

“He’s had ten months without a competitive start and it’s a long time to be out.

“He’s a good player - he was blowing a bit in the first half which is only natural, when you come back into the senior side after injury.

“But as the game went on I thought he got stronger and he was very composed, as we saw.

“It was just disappointing the manner of the goals that we conceded as a team."
