MALDON Golf Club vice- captain Terry Butcher returned to competitive golf last weekend after an enforced lay-off and promptly secured victory in the Krohn Cup.

He won by two clear shots with an excellent score of +5 in the bogey format competition.

Despite the wet and windy conditions, several players returned very respectable scores.

Butcher had recently undergone surgery on his hand which had kept him out of the game for several weeks, so his victory was a fine achievement given his lack of match practice.

Second place went to Jim Scott on +3, while Dave Porter just edged out Rob Poynton in third place on countback on +1. Fifth place went to Garth Milford with a score of level, again on countback, from Darren Mason.

The nearest the pin prizes for the day went to new member Craig Lewis on the par three fifth/14th and to Keith Locke for the closest second shot on the par four sixth/15th.

The men’s July monthly stableford was won by Dave Butcher on 38 points on countback from Jon Wenlock.

Third place went to Nigel Larken on 30 points, while Andrew Crozier was fourth on countback, also on 30 points.

Maldon Seniors played another of their many friendly matches, this time away against Colne Valley Golf Club.

A good game was had by all but the home team ran out comfortable winners 5½-2½.

Maldon Seniors also recently competed for their Centenary Trophy.

This is played in a full-handicap medal format off the white tees and some very good scores were returned.

This year’s winner was Mike Worden with a marvellous score of nett 65.

Second place went to Colin Pinn on nett 67 and third place went to Chris Pratt with a nett 71.

The Maldon ladies’ section played the Doe Cup, a stableford foursomes competition.

Winners this year were Sally Francis and Margaret Caviel with 30 points.

Second were Jean Roberts and Val Rayner on 28 and in third were Mary King and Laura Reilly on 25.
