COLCHESTER and Tendring Athletic Club’s Joy Ogunleye claimed bronze at the English Schools’ Athletic Association Track and Field Championships.

Despite a hamstring injury keeping her sidelined for two months, the 14-year-old was in fine form in the junior girls’ 200 metres at Gateshead.

Ogunleye showed her desire and determination to win her heat in a personal best (PB) of 25.03 seconds.

And she clocked an excellent 25.50s in the final, to leave her coach Ian Kelly suitably impressed.

CATs’ athletes had their tents and waterproofs at the ready for another Eastern Young Athletes League fixture, at a rain-soaked Bury St Edmunds.

The team started with some solid performances from Lauren Flude, Freya Richardson and Alfie Kelway in the hurdles.

CATs debutant Elkan Baggott was third in the under-15 boys’ 800m in two minutes 32.2 seconds.

And he went on to win the boys’ discus with a throw of 18 metres 82 centimetres, with CATs’ Patrick Kennedy finishing third in the B string.

Harvey Durling was victorious in both the A string under-17 men’s 100m in 11.3s, followed by the 200m (23.6s).

Jameel Garba left it late to win the under-17 long jump, leaping 5.81m to claim victory with his third and final jump.

In the under-15 girls, Elsie Gray had to run the 1,500m in a torrential downpour but still finished a creditable fourth.

Lydia Callan also had to battle heavy rain in the under-17 girls’ event, finishing fourth.

Ellisa Baggott secured a PB of 1.45m in finishing third in the A string under-15 girls high jump, while Emma Gadsdon was second in the B string (1.35m).

In the under-13 girls’ discus, Olivia Page gained a PB and second place in the A string with a throw of 18m 16cm. Mia Patterson and Charlotte Maher finished fourth in their respective 100m and 200m races.
