BRIGHTLINGSEA Regent have beefed up their midfield with two new signings.

Brendan Heath has arrived on a season-long loan from Needham Market while Luke Read has joined from Ipswich Wanderers.

Regent boss James Webster hopes the talented pair will help fill the void vacated by departing duo Amir Berkane and Ollie Canfer.

“The squad is shaping up nicely and we’re delighted to have signed Brendan and Luke,” said Webster.

“Brendan, who was on loan at Brantham Athletic last season, is highly-rated and similar in both style and physique to Amir.

“Needham have a bit of an embarrassment of riches when it comes to midfielders and that’s why they were happy to let him join us.

“He’s looked good in training and we’re excited to have him on board.

“Amir has been training with us but I don’t expect him to be around next season, as he’s been offered a scholarship with a category one college in America.

“It’s such a great opportunity for him and while we’d love to have him around, because he’s such a good player, we’re encouraging him to go for it.”

Webster admitted trying to sign Read two years ago, but the midfielder wanted to stay loyal to Ipswich Wanderers.

Dad Glenn is manager of the Thurlow Nunn League club.

“Luke’s someone we’ve always admired,” said Webster.

“He’s always played well against us but I know he’s been reluctant to leave Ipswich.

“Now he’s decided the time is right to test himself at a higher level.

“We’re delighted because he’s a really energetic, box-to-box midfielder who scores goals, much like Ollie (who has joined AFC Sudbury).

“Amir and Ollie were two of our best players last year so it was important to try and sign like-for-like replacements.”

Webster, who still hopes to sign a wide man, also confirmed that left-back TJ Amass has left North Road.

The club have had three pre-season training sessions so far, including one in a gym on Saturday.

“It’s great to get everyone back together,” said the Regent boss.

“Everyone has returned in good shape and full of enthusiasm, with a very professional attitude. All the players want to better themselves and fulfil their potential.”
