There could be a familiar face linking back up with Braintree Town’s squad when they gather for their first pre-season training session under the management of Danny Cowley.

The Iron’s players are due back on June 25 to start six and a half weeks of training and pre-season games and Cowley said former loan player Billy Gibson could be among those turning up.

Cowley confirmed the signing of central defender Matty Fry this week, but said he is still hoping to add another centre-half to his squad as well as another goalkeeper and a right-sided midfielder and right-back.

Gibson may be the midfielder that Cowley is looking for.

The 24-year-old impressed while on loan at Cressing Road from Yeovil Town at the end of the 2011/12 season, when he made eight starts and scored two goals but he opted for a move to Cambridge United after being released by the Glovers.

He only made five appearances for the U’s due to injury problems, but Cowley said he is over them now and will have a chance to prove himself in pre-season for a return to the Iron.

Cowley said: “I know Billy had a spell at Braintree a couple of years ago when he was on loan from Yeovil and I understand it was successful.

“He ended up going to Cambridge but he does know Braintree.

“He had some groin problems that stopped him playing more for Cambridge and he ended last season at Hemel Hempstead, but he’s finally over those problems now. So we’ll just be making sure that he can cope with the demands of playing at this level again.”

Cowley also confirmed that former Watford trainee and Oxford United full-back Matt Bevans had also been invited to training over the summer.

“Both players have been invited in for pre-season so we can have a look at them,” he added.
