WEST Mersea sailor Saskia Clark has set her sights firmly on gold at this week’s ISAF Sailing World Cup in Weymouth.

Clark, with helm Hannah Mills, will be one of three British crews going all out for honours on home waters in a strong women’s 470 Class.

The pair have good memories of the venue, having won silver there for Team GB at the 2012 Olympic Games.

And Clark, 35, says she and Mills will be going all out for victory on the fourth stage of the revamped world tour, which gets under way today.

“We’re looking at gold medals now, if I’m honest,” said Clark.

“That’s what keeps us both motivated and inspired to do well.

“We’ve had a lot of close seconds and we want to go out and try and win.

“We go into every event wanting to do as well as we can.

“We’re getting to a point now where we’re going into events where we know if we deliver our best, we can win. We have a great working relationship together and it’s important that we motivate and inspire one another when we go into these events.

“This week is super-important for us.

“This week fits into our programme and every World Cup event gives us a chance to test out what we’ve been working on.

“We feel like we’re getting better and better and it’s a chance for us to carry on that progress.”

Clark says being back in Weymouth brings back happy memories of the Olympic Games being staged there, three years ago.

“We’ve been training here for months and it’s exciting that we have everyone back here again,” she said.

“There’s a real buzz and it reminds me of the kind of atmosphere during the Olympic Games.

“It really feels like the biggest event that we’ve had for a while.

“We’ve always enjoyed racing in the big events where there’s pressure – it’s something we thrive on and relish.”

Racing at the World Cup starts today, with the final ten boat medal races for the Olympic Classes taking place on Sunday.
