The sun shone on West Mersea Cricket Club as they celebrated their David Fahie Day.

The event was a combined Club Community Day, in association with Waitrose, and a memorial day for David Fahie who passed away in May 2013.

Over 40 players turned up to take to the crease on Sunday with play starting at 11am and continuing into the early evening.

West Mersea Cricket Club’s treasurer and colts co-ordinator Graham Pryke said: “David played for the club for over 30 years, although he had a few years away with work.

“He was just always there to help, he helped with junior training, running kids and adults to games, making teas, umpiring, scoring, prepared to be 12th man for those days when somebody dropped out at the last moment.

“And he also was always there washing up, packing things away at the end of the day.

“David’s sister Lucy Warner and her family came up from Taunton to award a trophy that they had donated in his honour.

“Four teams were put together by the club and we played four games over the day with a team captained by Luke Conway, The Badgers, coming out victorious in a close finish in the gathering gloom.

“The game was played in a great spirit in the way that David would have loved.

“At the end of the day players gathered for the trophy to be handed over and were treated to vast quantities of food prepared and donated by the players wives/parents which as ever was superb.

“Hopefully this will become part of an annual day as it was just so great to see so many friends old and new who turned up to play, watch or chat.”
